Importing and laying out data from excel to run panel data in EViews.
My first problem is that I’m not sure how to correctly to lay out my data in excel. The regression I want to run is below and I attached the excel spreadsheets too. Could you please tell me how to correctly lay out this data? Second problem is that when I try and import the data it says “Unable to open the file…”. Is this because my data is incorrectly laid out or what else could be the problem?
yij,t=αi + β1i x1ij,t +β2i x2ij,t +εi
yij,t: Percentage of portfolio traded in equity of country j by investors of country i at time t
αi: $ amount invested in country j by country i
x1ij,t: Percentage of trade of country i with country j
x2ij,t: Geographical proxy (distance of capital city of country i from capital city of country j in km)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
Hi yes I found this after my last post. I’m following the steps for “How to enter data into a panel workfile” (the one posted on Fri Oct 10, 2008 5:50 pm) on that page and when I get to the “Check everything looks ok on the preview, and hit Finish” step I get the screen shot which I attached below. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong or how to move on from there? I also attached the Excel file that I used.
Thanks
Thanks

EViews 6 does not support .XLSX files.
Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
Hey thanks for your help so far. I have one more question. I have the Equation Estimation window open and I’m not sure what to put in the Equation Specification box. I want to run below equation and I have t, i, α, x1 and x2 in my panel data. I know I have to get the β for x1 and x2 but not sure how. Also what steps do I need to do to run the regression? Thanks
yij,t = αi + β1i x1ij,t + β2i x2ij,t + εi
yij,t: Percentage of portfolio traded in equity of country j by investors of country i at time t
αi: $ amount invested in country j by country i
x1ij,t: Percentage of trade of country i with country j
x2ij,t: Geographical proxy (distance of capital city of country i from capital city of country j in km)
yij,t = αi + β1i x1ij,t + β2i x2ij,t + εi
yij,t: Percentage of portfolio traded in equity of country j by investors of country i at time t
αi: $ amount invested in country j by country i
x1ij,t: Percentage of trade of country i with country j
x2ij,t: Geographical proxy (distance of capital city of country i from capital city of country j in km)

Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
Just enter Y C X1 X2, then on the options tab say you want fixed effects.
Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
It say the y is not defined! I don't have y in my data...thats what I want to find out by running the regression from above. Any ideas what I cav do? Thanks

Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
Perhaps Y is the variable you call PERCENT?
Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
No sorry the variable that I have called PERCENT is my x1ij,t, GEOPROXY is my x2ij,t and DOLLAR is my αi. I'm trying to run this regression to find out what yij,t is.

Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
I think you misunderstand what a regression does. You need to know both the left and right hand side variables. The regression tells you the values of the coefficients.
Re: Importing and Laying Data from Excel to Eview for Panel
Thanks. I changed my regression around with my Y (PERENT), α (DOLLAR), x1 (GEOPROXY) and x2 (GDP) all defined in my data as you can see on the Excel file attached. I want to run the below regression. When I open the Equation Estimation window open and put “percent = dollar + c(geoproxy) + c(gdp)” in the Equation Specification box, I got “5654 is not a valid index for vector-series-coefficient C”. 5654 is the first observation in the geoproxy column. What am I doing wrong now and what can I do to run the regression. Sorry for so many questions.
yij,t = αi + β1i x1ij,t + β2i x2ij,t + εi
yij,t: Percentage of equity trade of country j by investors of country i
αi: $ amount invested in country j by country i
x1ij,t: Geographical proxy (distance of capital city of country i from capital city of country j in km
x1ij,t: GDP in US$ of country j
yij,t = αi + β1i x1ij,t + β2i x2ij,t + εi
yij,t: Percentage of equity trade of country j by investors of country i
αi: $ amount invested in country j by country i
x1ij,t: Geographical proxy (distance of capital city of country i from capital city of country j in km
x1ij,t: GDP in US$ of country j
