Click & drag to select multiple series

Postby jthodge » Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:13 am

A nice feature of Eviews 6 was the ability to click on a series in the workfile view and drag to select multiple adjacent series (for opening a group, equation, etc.).

However, this feature does not seem to work on Eviews 7.

Was this feature deliberately disabled? Or will it be included in a future patch?

The feature is still there, it is a little harder to do. You have to click and drag to the right of the object names.

The reason this was changed was to make room for the new feature that allows you to drag and drop a set of objects to/from workfiles and databases and even dropping objects into a program and the command window.

In other words, clicking and dragging on the names of the objects is different than clicking and dragging to the right of the object names.

It is still there, just a little more tricky to do. If you click the white space next to an object's name and then drag, it will perform the multiple selection. If you click on the object's name, it will do drag and drop.

With short object names, doing the multiple select is easy. With long object names it can be tricky to find the white space next to the names.

Thanks ... works perfectly. I was just used to clicking on the names and dragging, but clicking in the adjacent white space works fine.

However, now that you alerted me to the new drag & drop feature in Eviews 7, I've been experimenting and cannot seem to get it to work.

I tried something a simple as (left-)clicking on a series in my workfile and dragging it into the spreadsheet view for a group. Yet nothing happened ... the series was not added to the group and the "+" symbol didn't even appear. I also tried clicking the existing "Untitled" tab of my workfile to the "New Page" tab and nothing happened.

Any suggestions? I'm probably missing some simple here...

In the case of dragging a series to a group, both the group and series must be from the same workfile. Other than I can't think of any other reasons why it would not work. When dragging a series, does the cursor change to the EViews icon (red box with a green and blue box underneath)?

In the case of the dragging a workfile page, does the cursor change to an arrow with a tab (polygon shape) behind it? I should note dragging pages does not have to be within the same workfile.

Nothing happens when I try clicking and dragging. After I click on a series (and hold down the left mouse button) my cursor remains as a white arrow if I move the mouse. I haven't had any trouble doing click-and-drag with any other Windows programs. The only feature I can get to work is if I drag an Excel file from Windows Explorer into the Eviews workspace, the "Excel - Read" dialog box opens up (while I'm dragging I do see the little Excel icon and a "+" symbol next to my cursor). Any ideas what might be going on? I'm using Windows XP Professional (sp3) on a Dell PC.

Other than pointing out the obvious, such as making sure your copy of EViews is up to date and rebooting your machine, I am not sure what the problem could be.

If you search the web, some people have reported problems with XP SP3 when dragging but it is not clear if that is related or not.

jthodge,

Have you been able to resolve the issue or is the problem still outstanding?
