Fetching from EIA Database: COM library error

Postby jaylamb20 » Wed Sep 16, 2015 8:43 am

Hello,

I am running EV9 Enterprise on Windows 7 and am struggling to open the EIA database. I added EIA to my db registry and ran the following from the command line:

Code: Select all

dbopen EIA
The following error was immediately returned:

"Database Error: COM library error: 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object'".

I tried the same process on a different machine with a different copy of EV9 Enterprise and I had no issues.

Thoughts?

I would make sure you are up to date (select help->EViews update) and then type:

Code: Select all

regcomponents
and press enter into the command window.

See if that fixes the problem

Hi Jason,

I'm running EV9 in an enterprise setting where I don't have Admin rights, so it may take a bit of time for me to run an EViews Update. For what it's worth, when I run regcomponents it shows both the EIA Online Database and EIA Bulk File as registered.

If just updating doesn't solve the issue, should I follow the EViews prompt to "re-register all components"?

I will let you know when I've run an update and tried again.

Cheers,

-James

Select help->about EViews. If you more than 2 months old I would update.

'Regcomponents' is more important, so I would try this first and say yes to 're-register all components'. This however also requires admin privileges.

Yep, looks like I'm using a build from July. I will try running regcomponents asap and let you know how it goes.

Thank you for your help.

Jason,

I got temporary Admin privileges today and tried your recommended solutions. I updated to the newest build of EV9 (September 14 2015) and ran regcomponents to re-register all components.

Nothing has changed. The EIA Online Database stills shows up as "registered" when I run regcomponents and I still get a COM library error when trying to open the DB.

Do you have other recommendations? Are you able to replicate this error with the most recent EV9 build?

Thank you,

-James

We are seeing different issues with the 32 bit version of EViews but not the 64 bit version.

What version are you using?

Jason,

Here is my environment:

Eviews: EV9 Enterprise (64-bit), September 14 2015 Build
OS: Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)

To reiterate...I am running EV9 Enterprise (most recent build) on Windows 7 Home on my home laptop, and have not had the same issues. From home, I'm able to access the EIA databases as expected without error.

Thank you for your help,

-James

Can you list the versions of Microsoft .NET you have installed on your non-working computer? If you open the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework directory on your computer, you will see a list of directories starting with v*. Please list those directories.

Thank you. I have sent an email and I look forward to speaking with an EViews rep soon.

Whenever we resolve this, I will return to the thread and post a solution for other users.

Just to close this off for new readers coming to the forum...

Mine was an edge case, and a fix will be included in the next patch of EV9.

Thanks to Jason and the EViews team!
