Reorganizing data

Postby cmgconsulting » Wed Apr 21, 2010 7:00 am

I have 53 series in a workfile. Series 1 is a list of item numbers and series 2-53 are weeks 1 through 52 with unit sales for that item number. What I'd like to have is one series that is units, one series that is time (weeks), and one series that is item number. In excel, I would just do a pivot table and be done. But, I have roughly 2.4 million rows of data that I want to convert into 2.4MM x 52 rows so that I can easily run subsets, regression analysis, etc. Help! [EViews 7]

Sounds roughly like you have a pool setup, and you want to convert it into a panel setup. If so, just make a pool object, where the "cross-section" identifiers are the weekly identifiers in the names of your series. Then convert that pool object to a panel:

If you have trouble, just post your workfile (or a smaller version of it)

I got this to work when I only reshape two or three weeks, but if I do week? to do all 52 weeks it says "workfile too large for this version of EViews." Thoughts?

Just realized my problem... EViews will only let me do 15 million rows. If I want this layout, I'd need about 60 million. I'll have to do subsets before I can use the general layout for time series analysis.
