Virtualizing Eviews 6

Postby jacobyte » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:07 am

Gave up on this as we virtualize all software for roll-out to our student teaching facilities using virtual machines.
We use virtual machines to package software as this is a *lot* easier and quicker than our old method of setting up clean machines and imaging them using Ghost.
Eviews 6 detected it was running on a virtual machine and refused to licence itself from our campus licence server.

Hope this save others with a similar packaging strategy some heartache and wasted time.

Hopefully, QMS will see the light and remove this restriction so that we and others can deploy legitimately licensed software in an efficient fashion.

EViews 6 works fine in a virtualised environment - you just have to have the correct license. If you contact our office, they can point you in the right direction.

So what sort of licence do I need to run this as a virtualized application using MS App-V?

Generally you just have to contact our office and we can turn most academic licenses (I presume you're talking about an unlimited lab license in this case - which should be no problem at all) into a virtualisation allowed license. I believe the error message you would have received when you tried to run EViews (although older versions of the license manager program may not have had this message) would have said something along the lines of "Please contact our office". All you have to do is contact us, and then we can switch virtualisation on for you.

Just to clear up the above statement - there should be no problem with running an unlimited lab license server on a virtualised environment. Running the clients (and re-reading your initial post, this may be what you meant) of a lab license on a virtualised machine is a bit more problematic (although you should still contact our office)

What exactly is the contact email and phone to follow up on this issue? All I can find is sales.

It isn't categorised by license type. You'll have to contact our sales team and ask.
