Categorical variable in logit/probit/tobit models

Hi. I have a regression variable that describes one of four categories my samples go to. Somewhere over the internet I found suggestion to create dummy variables for types of variables my is. I made some tests and coefficients in logit/probit make sense to me, but is this right thing to do?
