Generating a series mixing numbers and strings

Postby julien » Mon Oct 25, 2010 3:33 am

I am a beginner in Eviews and I need some help to generate a series.

Here is what I have so far:
I am using an unstructured workfile, with 4389 data per series. I have already an alpha series containing the name of the countries, ie us us us... 208 times then uk uk for the next 208 times, etc.. (for 20 countries)
In Excel, I have two columns: in the first one, I have the name of the countries, in the second I have a data, one per country.

Here is what I need:
In need to generate a series in Eviews containing 208 times the us-associted value, 208-time the uk-associated value, etc...

I guess I need to import my Excel columns into Eviews, but I don't know under what type of object, neither do I know how to use this object to create the final series.

Thanks a lot for your help, I hope my explanations are understandable enough.

Create a new workfile page that has the same number of observations as the number of cross-sections (countries) you have. Create an alpha series in that page containing the country names. Copy the data from Excel into a series in that page. Then, in EViews, copy from the new page to the original page, using the country series as the match-merge ID.

Thanks a lot Eviews Gareth, I appreciate your help! :D

Unfortunately, when I copy the series with the numbers from the new to the original Eviews file, I obtain a series with only NA's in it.
Here is how I pasted: copied the numbered series/paste special/clicked on "General match merge criteria"/entered "country" in both "Source ID" and "Destination ID". (As I named "country" the new alpha series and there is an alpha series named "country" in the original workfile). Do you know where is the point?

Sounds like you're doing it right. Could you post your workfile?
