Lead and Lag Variables

Hi, I am running a simple OLS regression and wanted to lag one of my independant variables so I typed this in:
LS LNAIRREALSA C LNSGIPSA LNAIRFUEL LNEUIPSA(-3) LNFFR(-1) DUMMY3
however, i kept getting a wrong signage until i changed it to lneuispa(3), and when I generated the lag and lead series separately, the lneuipsa(-3) was moved down 3 data points (1st three data points were "NA") and for the lneuispa(3) it was moved up three data points, which meant the last 3 had "NA" values. Isn't it suppposed to be the other way round? When I lag a series it is supposed to move up and when I lead a series it is supposed to move down? Pls help! thanks!
