Creating dummy variable from annual time series data

Hi, everyone. I need you guys help on this part. My data set is annual data from 1960 to 2012.
Dependent variable is Mining value
Explainatory variable is GDP
I am asked to put 0 for the year up to 1993 and 0 for 1994 onwards. I am really not sure whether my procedure is correct or not.
I Genr D1=0 up to 1993 and manually edit (edit +/-) the rest by typing in 1.
In order to create the equation, I think I have to multiply those dummary variable set with GDP and having second explanatory variable in my analyse.
Can anyone tell whether my procedure is correct?
