Calculating Electricity Efficiency Improvement

I would like to calculate electricity efficiency improvement for my model using value added as a proxy. Is it possible? Well, I have time series data for value added for the economy (transport, agriculture, mining, wholesale, manufacturing, etc.) and i have gross electricity generation. How do I proceed from here? Can I divide my value added data by the gross electricity generation? What is the right way to deal with a case like this?
