Add vertical lines & shading.

Hi there. Through the UI I can add a vertical line for a given observation in my graphs. Say for September 2009. Can I do this programmatically as well? I know that I can copy shading and so on from a template, but this does not solve my problem as I wish to vary where the vertical line ends up based on data.
