Stationary Problem

Hi Guys,
I'm currently trying to make a regression on eviews, i was told by my supervisor to make my variables stationary so for example Gdp was dgp=gdp-gdp(-1) but the problem is that when i try to do the same with my FDI which i imported from excel it would change to characters and not let me do it.
Does anyone know what i can do solve this problem?
Also i don't really understand what stationary and non-stationary means, any chance someone could explain it to me please.
