Examples of shell and spawn usage?

Hi, I am not very into advanced programming with external programmes etc., but I discover shell and spawn commands as quite exciting ones for creating a new folder or opening an Excel file from Eviews - but it ends up on this, and Eviews manual (programming reference) is not clear enough for me to make up other possibilities of using these commands. Could you give some more clear and easy examples of shell and spawn "tricks"? Or maybe you could add this to one of the topics "list of useful threads and FAQs." or somewhere similar?

There aren't really many tricks to it. They're pretty straight forward. I guess you might be best off doing an internet search for things you can do with the Windows Command Prompt (or DOS), since that's all those command do.
