getting the name of a "normalized" variable in an equation

if I have an equation "gdp" that is specified, say, as:

ls @pcy(gdp) c x1 x2

is there code I can write that will look at that equation and give me the string "gdp" and not "@pcy(gdp)"? I am interested in doing this for a substantial number of equations for which dependent variables are defined through different types of auto series, and not always "@pcy" -- so I am hoping there is some way to extract the underlying variable into a string.

thank you
