Add variable - data consists of multiple years

Postby s.kuiters » Thu Jul 31, 2014 1:39 am

Hi,

I have a variable which measures the number of days between two specific dates. I would like to know how I can add this variable in EViews. The two specific dates are not incorporated in my dataset, so there is no possibility to calculate the number of days between these two dates in Eviews itself.

I tried to manually enter the data into the system. However, if I generate a new variable in Eviews I get a list with SEDOL-codes that is incomplete in comparison with the initial sample/list with SEDOL-codes. Do you have any idea how this is possible?

Finally, I have a more technical question regarding the number of days variable I want to add to my dataset:
My dataset consists of acquisitions in the UK between 2009 and 2011. Normally, a company acquirers another company in one of those years, in the remaining years there is no acquisition for that specific company. However, there are companies in my dataset that undertake two acquisitions in two different years. For example, company X acquirers company Y in 2009 and the number of days that has to be assigned to this acquisition is 10. In addition, company X also acquirers company Z in 2010 and the number of days that has to be assigned to this acquisition is 20. In 2011 company X does not undertake an acquisition. The interesting thing is that in this case the two acquisitions have the same SEDOL-code, because both acquisitions have the same acquirer. How do I know that EViews 'recognizes' these two acquisitions as two different acquisitions and that it assigns the right number of days to the right acquisition? I heard that Eviews only incorporates the first acquisition when you have data that consists of multiple years. If so, which acquisition is the first acquisition and why is it not possible to incorporate both acquisitions?

I hope you can help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Stefan

I'm afraid I don't understand the problem.

Perhaps you can provide example data files that illustrate your problem more precisely.

Hi Gareth,

Can you tell me what it is that you don't understand? Can I add a print screen to this conversation? Then I am better able to show what I mean.

Hi Gareth,

Let me try to explain it another time.

My first question is: How Can I add a variable in Eviews?

My second question is a technical question:

This variable that I want to add measures the number of days between the announcement date of an acquisition and the publication of the annual report (in which the business combination is disclosed).I have a database with mergers and acquisitions in the United Kingdom between 2009 and 2011. Some companies acquire just one company and other companies acquire two companies between 2009 and 2011. Furthermore, the acquirer has a certain SEDOL-code, for example 1234567. This is the identifier of the acquirer and thus for the business combination. If a certain company makes two acquisitions, these two different business combinations get the same SEDOL-code, so the same identifier. If I add this variable (which is the number of days between the two dates), how does Eviews know which number of days belong to the specific acquisition?

So the variable that I want to add is a list with acquisitions and a specific number of days. It looks something like this:
company X acquirers company Y in 2009 SEDOL-code acquirer is 1234567 number of days between announcement date of the acquisition and publication annual report is 100
company x acquirers company z in 2010 SEDOL-code acquirer is (also) 1234567 number of days between announcement data of acquisition and publication annual report is 200

Now my question is:
How do I know that Eviews recognizes the right acquisition (since both acquisition as mentioned in the example have the same identifier) and assigns the right number of days to the right acquisition?

Please let me know what is not clear about my questions and/or explanation. I think that my first question is pretty clear :)

It all depends on how your data is structured.

Only with more information. Perhaps you could provide the workfile.

There's an Upload attachment tab at the bottom of the page when you post a message.

Alternatively, you can just email it to support@eviews.com
