Gravity Model - new with eviews, please help

Postby julianne128 » Tue May 20, 2014 9:39 am

Hi,
I am completely new to EViews and would really appreciate your help :)

For my master thesis I am testing whether immigration has an influence on the level of imports (of cultural goods) into Canada between the years 1996 and 2010. There are 8 countries in this study (Canada, USA, France, UK, China, Germany, Italy and Japan).
For this research I plan on using the gravity model.

Here is my proposed model.
ln(Imports)=a+b1*ln(GDP canadai)+b2*ln(GDPj)+b3*ln(Geo Distance)+b4*ln(Immigrants)+ b5*ln(Cultural distance)+b6*(offcom lang)+b7*colony+b8*same continent+b9*trade

where:
ln(imports) = imports from country i and country j (e.g. from France and Canada)
ln(GDP Canadai) = Gross domestic product for Canada
ln(GDPj) = Gross domestic product for country j
ln(Geo Distance) = distance between country i and country j
ln(Immigrants) = immigrant stock of country j in Canada at time t
ln(Cultural distance) = an index of the cultural distance values by Hofstede (constant for each country of the 15 year period)

Dummy vairables (values of 0 or 1)
offcomlang = shared official common language between Canada and country j
colony = Canada is a former colony of country j
continent = Canada and country j are located on the same continent
trade = presence of a trade agreement between Canada and country j

***my panel data is attached in this message.

Could you please advise on how I would carry out this test and if there are any specifics that I need to be aware of.

Thank you very much. Your help would be amazing, at the moment I am feeling pretty useless as this ...

Cheers,
Julianne
