If you hit function key F2 in an equation window, an edit field opens. There doesn't appear to be a way to turn it off, except by resetting the View.

Is this the intended behavior?

This is intended behavior. If you press the right mouse button and select Edit+/-. This will turn it off.

We will look into toggling Edit mode with F2 key presses whereas right now it only turns it on.
