database name length

Postby michel » Fri Jun 25, 2021 3:22 am

Dear Support,

When trying to store the following variable in an eviews database:

Code: Select all

env_ac_ainah_r2__airpol_ch4_co2e_freq_a_geo_lu_nace_r2_a01_unit_ths_t

Eviews gives me an error message and wants me to change the name. So I noticed there is an issue with names above a length of 64 characters.

As I could not find any limitation of 64 characters in your documentation, I wonder if this is a bug?

For our teams purposes it would be very helpful if the Eviews databases would support name lengths up to 300 characters, such as in workfiles.

If this is a feature, how would you handle renaming, knowing that you would have to rename thousands of series?

Kind regards,

michel

I can confirm that this is an issue, but there is not an easy fix at the moment. Changing EViews databases to support the longer names will require us to break compatibility with older versions of EViews. Coming up with a strategy to allow older versions to open the same database file while supporting longer names will require some time. We'll put this on our list of items to tackle but in the meantime just keep your names to less than 64 characters.
