I just opened EViews 7, opened help, clicked on the index tab, got a message "There is not enough memory for this task." and EViews died.
Before opening EViews, Task manager shows commit charge 1468/3923. After opening EViews, 1485/3923. After clicking on Help/EViews Help Topics 1649/3923.

Very odd. Can you try a reboot and see if it is replicable? And were you opening the main page on the help or one of subtopics?

You don't think I would report a bug like this until I had already rebooted once and repeated it, do you?*
I chose "EViews Help Topics..." and then clicked on the Index tab.

The crash is 100% repeatable on this machine, never happens on my machine at home. I wonder if it has something to do with the index being built for the first time???

Since it's a rhetorical question, I won't tell you what I thought
I honestly have no idea about the help system issue. It's a standard, vanilla help system in Microsoft compiled HTML format. The program that runs it is obviously Microsoft's, and is a part of the standard IE suite that one gets. We just launch the standard program and point it to the file. Why it's bringing down EViews, I just don't know.
Can you open the CHM file directly? Navigate to your EViews installation directory and just click on it...

Re: EViews 7 memory death
Opening the .chm file directly works fine. After I do that, opening it from EViews still causes a crash. Note that EViews crashes too, not just the help system.

Re: EViews 7 memory death
Interesting. The reason it crashes us is that it runs in the same thread. What's tough is that we can't replicate it on this end. Is there anything else special about this computer? What version of IE?

Re: EViews 7 memory death
Is the help system local or is it on a network server?
And could you post your security settings?
From everything that I see, your system is more or less identical to mine, though your available physical memory seems a bit low given your actual physical memory...

help system is local.
I don't know how to find my security settings.

Re: EViews 7 memory death
Ok, we figured out what was causing the problem.
Our help system for EViews 7 went back to using CHM files which are Compiled HTML files displayed by Windows itself using an embedded Internet Explorer browser control. Normally, this help window runs in the same process as EViews itself so it has to share memory. Because EViews reserves a large amount of memory address space upon startup, the help system (probably due to IE) is running out of memory on some systems.
One easy workaround for this is to increase the amount of memory EViews leaves behind for Windows. Go to EViews->Options->General Options->Advanced system options and increase "Memory reserved for Windows, DLL files, device drivers, and the EViews heap" dropdown to at least 600 MB, maybe even 800 MB. This seems to resolve the issue for those who are experiencing crashes.
We've also developed a full solution for this (help will now run in a separate process) and it will be released shortly (perhaps on Monday, 1/18/2010). If you can wait for that, that'll be the best solution.
