For a variety of reasons, there are relatively few modeless windows in EViews. The new command window is a notable exception.
A modal window blocks all other workflows in the top-level program until the modal window is closed, as opposed to modeless dialogs that allow users to operate with other windows. Modal windows are intended to grab the user's full attention

I didn't realize this was true for the top window in an MDI interface, but if it is then it's best to stick with the standard.
