Graph template issue

Postby Tatha on Thu Mar 10, 2011 4:15 am

Hello,

I am facing an issue with graph templates after re-installing Eviews on a new PC. I am suspecting that a global option needs to be turned on, but I can't identify which one. Could you pls help. The issue is that I apply custom graph templates to newly created graphs all the time. Now, I am noticing that bi-axis templates are not being applied (i.e. if the template uses 2 y-axes, the resulting graph still uses only 1 y-axis). I need to be able to apply the choice of 2 different axes with manual scaling pre-decided for each axis.

Thanks in advance,
Tatha

The change is probably due to the version of EViews you're using, not a global setting. Were you running an older version of EViews on the other machine?

EViews 7 templates do not apply axis assignment or scale endpoint settings.

Thanks Pamela. Yes, then that is the issue. But it is a serious drawback and renders most of my earlier programs unusable. I use large volume of graphs which are customised using a template, and the assignment of various series to the two different y-axes with custom scaling is such a crucial step. These are run via programs and not customized one at a time. Is there a reason this change has been implemented in v7? Was the earlier feature conflicting with something and needed to be corrected? If not, could you pls include this feature as a 'crying request' on the wishlist for the next update. Thanks.

The reason behind the change for version 7 was to allow the application of one template to graphs with varying axis and scale setting. For instance, applying specific axis settings would prevent you from applying a template to both single-axis and dual-axis graphs.

However, we believe the ability to selectively apply or not apply these options is valuable, so it will be included in a future update. (Similar to the existing options for applying text object settings.)

Absolutely Pamela. Thanks for understanding. I guess it is good practice to let the default switch positions behave compatibly with the older version, with a new option for the switch to execute the new feature. That way, old programs will run without modification (as in my case). In any case, the templates are really useful because we want to use various settings from a past example graph. In other cases, one could set up a global default template which has 'automatic' scaling for the axes, and just continue creating plots as normal to use only e.g. line-style settings.

There is another graph setting which the templates do not apply, even in v6: and that is custom 'legend text'. Legends always revert to the series name even if we have modified the legend manually in the template. Again, it would be useful to have the option.

Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions. We have implemented both template options, and they should be included in the next EViews update.

With the template command, you may now use the 'A' option to include the template's axis settings, and the 'L' option to include the legend text. (These can be used together and along with the existing options.) Interactively, there are 2 new checkboxes representing these options in the template dialog.

Hi, I updated to the 21 March build today. You didn't mean that the template options were included in this one already, did you? If so, I couldn't activate them, and I don't see the interactive checkboxes either. But hopefully, it is coming in the next update....

While experimenting, I also remembered that I use the template option from within the graph command (not as a second line operating on the graph object). e.g. line(t=xyz, name=abc) xxxxxx

Pls activate the axis scale and legend options this way too.

Thanks in advance

You may now use the "axis" and "legend" options with both the template command and during graph creation:

graph1.template(axis, legend) templatename

x.line(t=templatename, axis, legend)

The changes will be in this afternoon's update.

Hi Pamela, doesn't appear that a more recent patch has been posted on the download site yet...

I've got a workbook with multiple sheets each containing a graph.

Is it possible to apply a template to how long does levitra last all the graphs at once rather than do them individually?

No, you'll have to do them one at a time.
