Dummy variable illegal or reserved name

Hello,
I looked up discussions for both dummies and illegal name, but still I didn't find what I am looking for.
I have imported from Excel panel data that contain years with positive and negative values, and I try to create a binary dummy for positive non-positive years and one for negative non-negative years.
The command I am using is this: genr dumneggr_? = ?_gr<0
where dumneggr corresponds to dummy negative growth the _? corresponds to the name of the country and ?_gr is the name of the country again plus the growth extension.
After using this, I get and illegal or reserved name error.
Could you, please, give me some hints what I might be doing wrong?
Many thanks in advance.
