Is there a simple way, through programming, to create a word document with colour charts and text?

Kind of.
You can add the graph(s) to a spool. You can then save the spool (spool.save) as an RTF file, which is sort of a Word document. The RTF will have colour if the File->Print Setup->Print in Color checkbox for graphs is set. Unfortunately there is no way to change that setting via a program.
