Importing data from excel, large amount of NA

Hi,

I am trying to import data from excel and I get up to 16382 values and then get NA for the rest (total amount of values are 32018). I was wondering if anyone could help. I am setting up the workfile as unstructured and then attempting to import all the data in. This is the same for all variables.

Could you provide details on exactly what you are doing, and if possible provide the workfile and the Excel file?

I have the same problem.
I know the cause, but I don't know how to solve this issue.
I want to import a series of daily exchange rates and I have chosen the 5-day week frequency. The problem is that there were some holidays (even 3-4 days) when there was no exchange rates reported. So, even if I declare the start and end date of the series, the last 40-50 cells are filled with NA.
Is there any solution to solve this issue?
Thank you!

You probably should choose an irregular frequency rather than trying to shoehorn into a 5-day. The holiday setting is exactly the kind of data for which the irregular was designed.

Hello! Thank you again for your answer. Now there is another problem. Well, I need to calculate variances for every quarter and, as I see, there no way to do this when using undated series.

To be clear about what I mean by irregular earlier...you should create an irregular dated (Dated - specified by date series). Given this structure there should be a variety of ways to compute what you want.

Ok, so I imported data from Excel. I had the following objects, beside the C and resid: date series and exchange rate series (non dated/irregular). Then, in the main menu I choosed Proc - Structure/Resize current page, then:
- work file structure type: Dated - specified by date series;
- date series: name of the object that contains the date series (i.e., dateser)
OK

And I solved the problem. Thank you again, and I hope that this small guide will help others.

Thanks Patrix for your tip because I had the same trouble with you. However, when I imported date variable from Excel, it became number format in Eviews, not date format as shown in Excel. Pls show me solution in this case. Tks alot.

In the data import wizard, you can can choose the type of data. Instead of General formating chose Date for the first column (be aware of the type of formating: YMD or DMY).

Hei

My EViews version i 7.

Problem:
Eviews doesn't read dates from Excel as dates (271921 cells).

What I tried:
i) make an Excel file with just the date column and an Excel file with the rest of data, then choose new work file
ii) choose unstructured/undated date
iii) write in the first date which is 12/29/2006
iv) import from Excel file which has no date
v) get the message that 99 observations (i.e. all in the sample) will be discarded unless 99 observations are resized, choose OK
vi) import from Excel file which has the dates
vii) choose Proc - Structure/Resize current page, then:
- work file structure type: Dated - specified by date series;
- date series: name of the object that contains the date series
viii) then I get the message "illegal panel structure dateid is nested within the previous dimensions of the panel structure"

What is wrong?

Not sure I follow what you're asking. What are you trying to do?

Need a little more information than that.

You have two Excel files. One only has dates. The other appears to have cross-section data in it. The fact that both files have the same number of observations makes me think that, perhaps, the two are related? If so, why not have them in a single Excel file?
