when saving a picture to pdf, you can make the background transparent, see
but how do you make the background transparent when saving from a spool object?

The way it is suppose to work (it will be fixed in the next patch), is you have to change the individual graph settings.
Each object in a spool has it's own settings. In this case, the graph in your spool has its own 'Make background transparent for printing..' setting. To set this, double the click graph in your spool. This will put the spool in edit mode, allowing you to edit graph. Next double the click the graph to display the graph options dialog. Under Frame & Size->Color & Border, uncheck the 'Make background transparent for printing...' check box.
Press OK to close the graph dialog and then press the 'Close' button to exit edit mode. From here saving the spool should result in a graph with a transparent background.
