Unit roots

Hi,
how can I tell whether particular data contains unit root or not? For example when I have data on US food production from 1961 on it does not contain any unit root, the process is trend-stationary. But how can I tell beforehand? What is the rational? I mean before any statistical test, before seeing the data.
