Which CPU to buy

Postby rclive » Tue Jul 17, 2012 12:18 pm

Hi Guys,

A bit of a different kind of question.
I'm buying a new PC and wondering if I would see a big performance difference in EViews between these CPU's (all Intel):
I7-3770K(ivy bridge) I7-3820(sandy bridge E) I7-3930K(sandy bridge E)

Depends on the sort of things you do in EViews.

Hi Gareth,

I do a lot of large scale macro-model simulation, time series and pooled estimation, work with large data sets, all within a fairly complex system of macros.
Any guidelines as to which CPU is appropriate for different classes of EViews work?

With large data sets, you'll get some pay off from having a larger number of cores. Ivy Bridge processors will be slightly faster than Sandy Bridge. Higher processor speed will also have an impact, as will more L3 cache. In general though, I'd say the difference between those three particular processors will be relatively small. Personally I might go for the largest L3 cache.

Thanks Gareth,
3770 has L3 = 8MB
3820 has L3 = 10MB
3930 has L3 = 12MB
The other big difference is the chipset for Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge, with the former using Quad channel memory versus dual.
